During the course, each student is required to do five optional subjects in three years. This can be done in the following three ways: (a) tutorial; (b) seminar; (c) electives.

In writing tutorials, the emphasis is laid on personal work, originality and the ability to grasp and communicate ideas. The tutorials are conducted as follows:

  1. The student selects the tutor and the theme of the tutorial and gets it approved by the Director
  2. Reading assignments are given to the students by the tutor
  3. Meetings and discussions are held on the basis of the readings and reflection
  4. a minimum of three meetings are required for each tutorial

The students are to choose the topics related to the context and general theme of the year and if possible, write assignments and papers in the language of the mission areas they belong to. The length of the tutorial paper shall be 10 to 15 pages. After completing the tutorial, each student makes a presentation in front of the staff and the fellow students for about 15 minutes.

Out of the five optional subjects, a student shall do one tutorial each in the first four semesters of theology. The fifth one could either be a seminar, tutorial or an elective course done in the fifth semester. Out of the tutorials done in the first four semesters, two shall be on the respective context of study, one on any branch of theology and the fourth one maybe on retreat preaching
