Comprehensive Examinations
For the successful completion of the course in theology, the student should have taken, in addition to the fulfilment of other requirements, the following five comprehensive examinations:
At the end of the second and fourth semester, students are required to write an examination or present a paper integrating the subjects taught during the year. It should also reflect the exposure programmes. A student failing to acquire at least 40% of the marks will have to repeat the exam The comprehensive examination in Moral Theology is held towards the end of January in the third year of theology. The duration of the examination is 30 minutes. The mode of the examination is oral (ad audiendas). The panel before which the students appear for the examination consists of three examiners. The successful completion of this examination is necessary for promotion to the Holy Orders. In case of a failure, the re-exam is fixed based on the merits of the individual case The comprehensive examination on the various biblical subjects will be conducted towards the end fifth semester. The duration of the examination is 30 minutes and the mode of the examination is oral. The panel of examiners consists of three. A set of theses is given to the students in advance for their preparation. The aim of the examination is to assess the student’s understanding of the background and the content of the various biblical books and his ability to interpret the scripture for the faithful. A student failing to acquire at least 40% of the marks will have to repeat the exam A student will be admitted to the comprehensive examination held at then of the sixth semester, only after he has successfully completed all the individual courses and the Research Paper. The duration of the examination is one hour. The mode of the examination is oral (viva-voce). The panel of examiners comprise six members. The various theses the students are expected to explain during the examination are based on Systematic Theology. A set of these theses is given to the students in advance for their preparation. The aim of the examination is to assess the ability of the student to arrive at a synthesis of various theological concepts as a result of his study of Theology. A student failing to acquire at least 40% of the marks will have to repeat the exam and he/she is given two more chances. At the end the sixth semester, every student is required to appear for a comprehensive written examination, prior to the oral comprehensive examination. The duration of the examination is three hours. The evaluation of this written paper would count for 40% of the mark of the comprehensive examination. The answer book is made up of two parts. The purpose of this examination, which is Part 1, is to know the theological acumen of the student to interpret his experiences in the light of the theological input he has received. He has to identify the underlying theme of the given problem and establish its theological foundations on the basis of the lectures, discussions and readings during the academic years. In answering the given problem, the student must show his scholarship and a comprehensive understanding of related issues. The answer book shall reflect his insight and personal application. At the end the sixth semester, every student is required to appear for a comprehensive written examination, prior to the oral comprehensive examination.
